This section of the CDT falls primarily within the Weminuche Wilderness which is under the jurisdiction of both the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests. As with most sections of the CDT, this trip resembles a roller-coaster ride, climbing up passes and dropping down through valleys, with elevations ranging between 10,600 and 12,600 ft. The scenery is breathtaking and ever-changing with a mix of deep, green forests; vast meadows with meandering streams; barren, exposed ridges; and tundra-like terrain at the higher elevations. Highlights of a trip along this section of the CDT would likely include watching a brilliant sunrise or sunset at Ute Lake; taking postcard photos at Nebo Pass of the majestic peaks and Nebo Lake below; marveling at geological formations such as The Window and Rio Grande Pyramid; being humbled by the power and intensity of a summer thunderstorm; and, if lucky, catching sight of an elk, moose, or black bear. On the practical side, water is available within reasonable distances all along the route late into the summer. Consider bringing a bear canister for food storage as hanging or stashing food is often difficult or impossible with so much of the route above tree line. Although bears may come into camp, the primary concern may be protecting one's food from smaller animals, such as marmots or squirrels. Thunderstorms are frequent and ferocious throughout the summer and present a serious risk if one is caught on a high pass or on one of the barren and exposed ridges running between the Beartown area and Stony Pass. Be sure to plan daily mileages so as to be off of these ridges and high points by afternoon. This trip can be done as a shuttle trip by making use of an old pack mule and stagecoach road that runs from Stony Pass to Rio Grande Reservoir. Some cautionary notes: the road is designated as a recreational 4WD road, but there are sections that are so rocky and rutted that it is advisable to have a vehicle equipped for off-road use. Because of the heavy recreational use, there is sometimes a surprising amount of traffic on the road which makes negotiating narrow sections and blind curves a greater challenge. If possible, plan to do your shuttling on a weekday morning to hopefully avoid the traffic jams. One final note, Timber Hill and Pole Creek may be impassable after significant rainfall, due to slippery road conditions and high water. Check with the local Ranger Station or Sheriff's Dept. for current road reports.

Location: 37.668995°, -107.335014°CDT marker which appears to be the junction of the CDT with the Weminuche Creek Trail, contrary to descriptions in the "Official Guide to the Colorado CDT" which places this marker right next to the Raber Lohr Ditch. The CDT is poorly signed in this area and the route can be difficult to determine due to several intersecting trails. Rincon La Vaca runs close to this point and is a good source of water.
