I rode up and down the western slope of the Middlebury Gap in preparation for the Green Mountain Stage Race. For those not from Vermont, a "Gap" is what the rest of us would call a "mountain pass." Vermont Route 125 goes east to west from the town of Hancock to the town of East Middlebury.
There are a few really steep pitches (see the elevation profile), but it's generally a long and steady climb. (It's funny to switch the elevation chart into time mode rather than distance mode.) There are a few tricky spots on the decent, but otherwise it's fast and smooth...enjoy!

Points of Interest
Base of the Gap
Location: 43.968604, -73.089295
I started my GPS here, at the base of the climb, this point is about 5 miles from the Town of Middlebury.
Bread Loaf Campus
Location: 43.952541, -72.986984
Look for the distinct yellow buildings of the Middlebury Bread Loaf campus on either side of the road. Watch for vehicles pulling onto or off of the road. This section is relatively flat.
Es Curves
Location: 43.956742, -72.996941
The pavement is a little rough on the es curves right below the summit. The pavement is smoothest on the yellow line, but watch for oncoming traffic.
Middlebury Snow Bowl
Location: 43.940428, -72.957802
Watch for traffic entering and exiting the ski area.
SHARP CURVES
Location: 43.968851, -73.085518
On the decent, right before you hit the base of the climb you'll descend a steep pitch, then the road takes a sharp veer to the right, crosses a narrow bridge with no shoulder, and then takes a sharp left. The pavement is rough on the bridge, and the corners cannot safely be taken at the speeds you'll be hitting off of the downhill, so break hard before you hit the first turn.
Summit
Location: 43.935484, -72.950935
The top of the climb is not marked, but there is a parking area for the start of a hiking trail. I rode a little bit past it, because I wasn't sure, but it's easy enough to spot. You can ride down the western slope of the gap into the town of Hancock to turn the ride into a double-gap, or turn around here to hed back to Middlebury, as I did.
Town of Ripton
Location: 43.972805, -73.034878
There are a few driveways and businesses in the sleepy little hamlet. There is a general store if you need some fuel.
