I am not a racer-but it's fun to ride with racers...when they're not racing. Thus the appeal of the Thursday night rides put on by Bozeman's community based GAS/Intrinsik competitive cycling team. The ride-which is open to everyone, whether you are a racer or not, meets at the Rocky Mountain Roasting Co. coffee shop at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. Depending on who shows up and how everyone is feeling a route is agreed upon (usually 20 to 40 miles). Sometimes they'll go out as one group with men and women. Sometimes the women split off and do their own thing. And sometimes, the team will put on a clinic as part of the ride emphasizing a skill like bike handling, sprinting, or cornering. The ride always starts out nice and mellow. If the strong guys and gals are recovering from a tough race, or saving up for an upcoming race, the pace may stay mellow. On the other hand, the ride often turns into a hammerfest. No worries getting dropped (which happens to me quite often) they usually regroup from time to time, or you can join up with a few riders going your own pace. The team is made up of some of the top riders in the State of Montana and it's always a fun learning experience riding with them. A rider should be somewhat self-sufficient-just in case the group is feeling especially frisky and leaves you behind. On this particular ride that I mapped, we had a small group, as the early fall weather was a little raw. We had a nice mellow ride on a popular 20+ mile loop. Threatening showers and late season darkness kept us from going further, but there are limitless possiblities for lengthening the ride off this loop. Points of Interest
Rocky Mountain Roasting
Location: 45.680625, -111.034967
Every GAS/Intrinsik Thursday Night Ride starts at Rocky Mountain Roasting (way better than Starbucks!) 111 East Mendenhall.
Sypes Canyon Road
Location: 45.748705, -111.044784
Heading up Sypes Canyon Road about to go up the short, but steep hill on Summer Cutoff (the hill is to the left of the riders in the photo).
Baseline Road
Location: 45.787532, -111.051822
Heading down Baseline Road with the entire Gallatin Valley before us. Tonight's ride was cloudy, but a little sun was trying to poke through.
Nelson Road
Location: 45.769514, -111.113234
Your intrepid author sporting the GAS/Intrinsik Team jersey and cruising down Nelson Road. I'm not a racer, but I think the jersey makes me look faster! Thanks to Alex for snapping the picture.
Davis Lane
Location: 45.710570, -111.082571
The guys cruising through the western outskirts of Bozeman on Davis Lane.
MSU Jersey
Location: 45.698671, -111.082871
There's almost always a Montana State jersey represented in the bunch. Bozeman is the home of Montana State University-Go Bobcats!
Music on Main
Location: 45.679560, -111.034334
Every Thursday night throughout the summer the downtown businesses put on "Music on Main". They block off a section of Bozeman Avenue off Main Street, set up a stage and bring in a band for a free concert. The event draws huge crowds to downtown on warm summer evenings and it's usually going strong by the time the GAS/Instrinsik ride finishes just couple of blocks away.
Sprinting clinic
Location: 45.773720, -111.046157
This lightly developed subdivision has nice paved roads and is often the site of a clinic put on by the GAS/Instrinsik team as part of the ride, such as sprinting or chasing down a breakaway.
Spain Bridge Meadows Subdivision
Location: 45.786963, -111.083987
This subdivision is very new and won't show up on a lot of maps-but it's there. It's a nice quiet place to ride.
Frontage Road
Location: 45.727079, -111.083000
The Frontage Road is generally not a very good place to ride-but this short stretch has a nice wide shoulder and there's a turn lane to make the left turn to Valley Center. Use caution though-traffic is usually traveling at high speed.
Davis Lane
Location: 45.724607, -111.082270
A very short stretch of Davis Lane off Valley Center Road is not paved (about 1/3 mile), but the surface was passable on a road bike. The stretch of rough road pays off as it gets you into some quiet west Bozeman subdivisions and away from the busy North 19th Avenue.
Oak Street
Location: 45.693021, -111.061091
Most of Oak Street, including the entire length between 19th and Rouse where it's busiest has a bike lane.
Clyde
Location: 45.776593, -111.104307
Wave to "Clyde" in front of famous local skulptor Jim Dolan's place. Jim has quite a sense of humor.
