GABA Cave Creek

This 45-mile “short but sweet” road ride begins in Roadforks, New Mexico, and takes you to the eastern side of the Chiricahua Mountains and the little town of Portal, at the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon. This is a great weekend tour for anyone trying touring for the first time.

The ride begins in Road Forks, New Mexico, just off the 10 freeway at the Arizona/New Mexico border. The first 30 miles is through gently rolling hills with one long downhill to the first SAG stop at mile 20. Then, we turn east towards the canyon and start a long gradual climb to the Portal Country Store.

After riding along a flowing creek in the shade of lush sycamore trees, riders meander on the canyon floor between spectacular towering cliffs! You’ll be in a narrow canyon with small meadows where deer graze at dusk. And, you’ll see birds of all descriptions everywhere around you!

Our one-of-a-kind destination is the Southwestern Research Station, surrounded by the Coronado National Forest and offering a welcome retreat from the heat of the desert. The Station, with its comfortable dormitory-style lodging, is operated by the American Museum of Natural History.

As you come upon this oasis, the beautiful grounds with tall trees and green grass beckon you! A 60-foot long, cool, creek-fed swimming pool will seem inviting at the end of this gradual climb! Enjoy ping-pong, volleyball, horseshoes and an interesting library as you await a generous dinner!

TO TRAILHEAD: Meet at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 80 about 5 miles EAST of the AZ/NM border at the Road Fords, NM exit. Road Forks is about 135 miles from Tucson (from the I-10/I-19 intersection). Allow about 2 ½ hours driving time from Tucson to the start. We will meet at the Desert West Motel (across the street from the Shady Grove). Please park in the dirt lot across the driveway from the motel.
