A mellow riverside cruise from Richmond, the River Trail (along the Winooski River) is ideal for recreational riders, parents looking to tool around with kids, and serious riders in search of a recovery ride. Departing from the On the Rise Bakery in Richmond proper, this route departs south across the Winooski River and then hangs a left on Cochran Avenue in front of the historic Old Round Church (a national historic landmark) to begin paralleling the river.

Less than a mile past the church, the River Trail departs from a signed trailhead on the left side of the road, ducking into the woods for a smooth descent on sandy dirt. From here, the trail follows the banks of Winooski for 3.8 miles, tracing the river under the cover of ferns and navigating across the occasional bridge. The multi-use trail is popular with cyclists, hikers, and trail runners, so take care to manage the traffic wisely. The trail ends at Wheeler Lane—those looking to extend the ride on pavement can continue east on Cochran Avenue and Duxbury Avenue toward Waterbury. Otherwise, spin around, and cruise back along the Winooski for a pastry reward back at On the Rise.
