This is the beginning of a 360-420 mile hike along Oregon's amazing coastline. The first 14.7 miles take us from the tower viewpoint at the South Jetty, to the North end of the town of Gearhart.
14.7 sandy miles; a mostly straight stretch of beach, nicely packed by the tide, makes it (next to) impossible to get lost. Don't worry about tiring out on this one; this first leg shares the beach with motor vehicles, so you can always hitch a ride with one of the friendly 4x4ers. As you lose the view of Washington to the North, you start to gain the sight of Tillamook Head to the South. The beach walk is broken up only by a shipwreck (the unfortunate Peter Iredale) and a (very) few road access points.
TO TRAILHEAD: 101 North to Fort Stevens State Park. Follow signs to South Jetty. Drop off a vehicle at the access road for a shuttle.

First stop for gear adjustment. Though sunny, it was very windy, and cold. The winds come from the North, which is why most people hike North to South. You can see the wreck of the Peter Iredale looming in the distance here.

One of the many ships that wrecked along the coast; its iron skeleton still draws visitors on sunny days.

They were very nice to let us park a vehicle here all day. And we had an awesome meal when we were done.
