Short on distance but quick on rise. A sturdy pair of boots, plenty of food/water and a walking stick is essential! Dall sheep, lynx and bears can be seen on this trying trail.
A popular trek for anyone looking for a quick workout or those looking to enjoy a day or two up top in the mountains, the castle takes a steady hand and patience. Most of the trip is running ridgelines but towards the end near the summit the trail disappears and it’s a scramble up and around larger rock formations. The castle is actually four different rock spires that from the north look like one big mass. When approaching it stay to the right and you will find a “V “the most logical place to climb up. No sheer rock faces but loose shale has the potential for serious injury. Views on a clear/ partly cloudy day are amazing. Take a walking stick to absorb the impact of loosing elevation at a quick pace when going down, your knees and ankles will thank you the next day
TO TRAILHEAD: Take The Parks Highway ( 3 ) and park at the small parking lot located at mile post 244. Cross highway ( look both ways) and you will see a worn path running the ridgeline up. Start hiking you will gain nearly 4,000 feet in under 3 miles

to access the castle you must climb up on the west side. sturdy hands, feet and patience are required. Loose rock (shale) makes this a little bit tricky
